The 3 Layout Mistakes Killing Your Yearbook Pages (And How to Fix Them)

Every yearbook adviser and student editor makes these same three mistakes. I've reviewed hundreds of yearbook spreads over the years, and these come up in nearly every single one.

Mistake #1: No Dominant Image

When every photo on the spread is the same size, the reader's eye has nowhere to land. The page feels like a grid of thumbnails instead of a designed layout.

The fix: Pick ONE photo per spread to be at least 2.5x the size of the others. This is your anchor. Everything else orbits around it. One dominant image transforms a flat page into a page with a story.

Mistake #2: Flat Caption Hierarchy

If every caption on the page is the same font, size, and weight, you've essentially told the reader "nothing here is more important than anything else." They'll skim and move on.

The fix: Use at least three distinct caption levels:

  • Level 1 — The lead caption. Largest, boldest. One per spread. This is your hook.

  • Level 2 — Supporting captions. Medium size. Give context to secondary photos.

  • Level 3 — Identifiers. Small. Names, dates, scores.

This alone will make your pages look 10x more professional.

Mistake #3: Ignoring the Grid

"Eyeballing" photo placement is the fastest way to make a page look amateur. Even small misalignments — a photo shifted 3mm off the column edge — create visual tension the reader feels but can't articulate.

The fix: Set up a 12-column grid with consistent gutters before placing anything. Every photo edge, every text block, every design element should snap to a column line. Period.

These three principles — dominant image, caption hierarchy, and grid alignment — are the foundation of every award-winning yearbook page. Master them and your book will look like it was designed by a professional.

I teach the complete system inside my course. But even applying just these three fixes to your current pages will make an immediate difference.
