5 things I wish someone told me when I started yoga
I've been teaching yoga for years, and I see the same mistakes every single beginner makes.
Here's what would've saved me months of frustration:
1. Flexibility is the result, not the requirement.
You don't need to touch your toes to start. That's literally why you're here.
2. Your breath matters more than the pose.
If you're holding your breath in a pose, you've gone too far. Back off. The breath is the practice.
3. Consistency beats intensity.
15 minutes daily will transform you faster than one 90-minute class a week. Every time.
4. Comparison is the enemy.
The person on the mat next to you has a completely different body. Your only job is to be present in yours.
5. It's not just exercise.
Yoga changes how you sleep, how you handle stress, how you carry yourself. The physical stuff is just the entry point.
