5 things I wish someone told me before starting yoga at home
I've been practicing yoga for years and I see the same mistakes from people starting out at home. Here's what actually matters:
1. You don't need fancy gear to start — but your mat matters.
A slippery mat will kill your confidence in downward dog faster than anything. Get something with grip. Everything else is secondary.
2. Blocks aren't cheating.
They're literally designed to bring the floor closer to you. If your hands don't reach the ground in a forward fold, use a block. That's the correct way to do it.
3. 15 minutes beats 0 minutes.
You don't need a 60-minute flow. A 15-minute morning routine will change how your body feels within two weeks. Consistency > intensity.
4. Follow along, don't memorize.
YouTube is your best friend early on. Don't try to remember sequences. Just follow and your body will start to learn naturally.
5. Your body is not "bad at yoga."
Flexibility is a result of yoga, not a requirement for it. Everyone starts stiff. That's the whole point.
If you're just getting started, I put together a beginner-friendly Yoga Starter Kit with everything you need — a proper non-slip mat, cork blocks, and a cotton strap. All under $50.
Happy stretching. 🧘♀️
