The exercise order most young guys get wrong when trying to look wider

Most teenage and young adult guys walk into the gym wanting broader shoulders and a V-taper. Then they spend 80% of their time on bicep curls and bench press.

Here's the priority order that actually builds visible width:

1. Lats first. Pull-ups, lat pulldowns, chest-supported rows. Your lats are the single biggest muscle responsible for that wide look from behind and from the front. If you're not training lats hard and often, nothing else matters.

2. Upper back. Face pulls, reverse flyes, seal rows. This fills out the area between your shoulder blades and makes your shoulders sit wider naturally.

3. Side delts. Lateral raises in multiple rep ranges. Not behind-the-neck presses. Not front raises. Side delts are what actually add width to your frame when you're standing in a t-shirt.

4. Chest. Yes, bench press matters — but it's fourth, not first. Most beginners overtrain chest and undertrain everything above.

5. Legs. Squats, leg press, RDLs. Non-negotiable for hormonal response and looking proportional — but legs don't build the V-taper. They support it.

Most guys reverse this entire list. They lead with chest and arms, ignore lats, and wonder why they look the same after 6 months.

If you want wider shoulders and a tighter-looking waist, train in this order of priority. Width first. Arms later.
