Couples don't fight about money. They fight about feeling unsafe.

The argument is never really about the $40 dinner.

One of you is trying to feel free. The other is trying to feel safe. Both are valid. Neither of you is "bad with money." You just never agreed on the rules, so every purchase becomes a referendum on the relationship.

Here's the pattern I see over and over:

  • One person tracks every dollar. The other feels policed.

  • One person spends to feel alive. The other sees the savings account shrinking and panics.

  • You have "the talk" once, it goes badly, then you avoid it for three months.

A joint budget doesn't fix that. A shared system does — one page, both names, a 20-minute weekly meeting, and rules you write together instead of rules one of you imposes.

If you keep having the same fight, start here: next Sunday, 20 minutes, phones away, write last month's income and the three bills that actually stress you out. Pick one rule for seven days. Not forever.

That's how you get on the same page without turning money into a personality test.
