I replaced a $4K/month freelance 3D modeler with AI. Here's exactly how.

Last year I was spending $4,000+/month on freelance 3D artists for my indie game. Characters, props, environments — it added up fast and the turnaround was brutal.

Then I started experimenting with AI 3D generation tools. Tripo, Meshy, CSM — I tested everything.

6 months later? My asset pipeline is 10x faster and costs almost nothing.

Here's what I learned:

The prompt matters more than the tool. Most people type "a sword" and get garbage. The difference between a usable game asset and a blob is specificity — material descriptions, polygon count hints, art style references change everything.

Post-processing is non-negotiable. AI gives you 80% of the way there. You still need to clean up topology, UV map properly, and optimize for your engine. But that's 2 hours vs. 2 weeks.

Not all tools are equal for game assets. Some are great for stylized art but terrible for hard-surface modeling. Others nail mechanical props but struggle with organic forms. Knowing which tool to use for what is half the battle.

The workflow stack matters. It's not just one tool — it's how you chain text-to-3D → retopology → texturing → engine import into a repeatable pipeline.

I've been documenting all of this — every prompt template, every workflow, every tool comparison — inside 3D Gen Lab.

If you're an indie dev bleeding money or time on 3D assets, this is the shortcut.
