After coaching producers through Ableton Live from scratch, I noticed the same pattern over and over: it's almost never a "skill" problem. It's a workflow problem. Three specific ones:

1. You're stuck in Session View forever

Session View is amazing for jamming and writing ideas — but it's not designed for finishing songs. If you never commit your ideas to Arrangement View, you'll loop the same 8 bars for weeks and call it "still working on it." Record your Session View performance into Arrangement View as soon as you have a solid idea, then force yourself to build the full structure: intro, build, drop, outro.

2. You mix before you arrange

Spending hours EQing a kick drum in a song that doesn't have a finished arrangement yet is wasted effort — you'll just redo it when the arrangement changes. Structure first. Mix last.

3. You have no "finished" checklist

Without a clear definition of "done," there's no line to cross. Professionals use a checklist: arrangement locked → rough mix balanced → reference track A/B'd → limiter on the master → exported. No checklist = no finish line = endless tweaking.

Small habit that fixes all three: timebox your projects. Give yourself a hard deadline (even a fake one) to get from idea to exported WAV. You'll be shocked how much "polishing" was actually just avoidance.
