3 technique mistakes that keep beginners stuck at the same level

I've coached hundreds of beginner tennis players. Almost every single one makes these same 3 mistakes — and fixing them is usually what unlocks their first real breakthrough.

1. Gripping too tight on the forehand

Most beginners death-grip the racket because they think power = squeezing harder. It's the opposite. A relaxed grip lets the racket head accelerate through the contact zone. Try this: hold the racket like you're holding a bird. Firm enough it won't fly away, loose enough you won't hurt it.

2. Watching the opponent instead of the ball

Your eyes should track the ball all the way to the strings. Not to the net. Not to where you want to hit it. To the strings. This one change will clean up 50% of your unforced errors overnight.

3. Flat feet on the ready position

If you're standing flat-footed between shots, you're already late. Stay on the balls of your feet with a slight forward lean. Think "basketball defense stance" — ready to explode in either direction.

These aren't advanced concepts. They're fundamentals that most people skip because they want to learn the fancy stuff first. Master these three and you'll beat every beginner at your local court.

I break down fixes like these every week inside Ace Academy.
