The 3 exercises everyone over 50 should be doing (and the 2 you should stop)
I've been coaching people over 50 for years, and I see the same mistakes on repeat.
The 3 non-negotiables:
1. Goblet squats — Your legs are the foundation. Goblet squats are joint-friendly, teach proper depth, and build real functional strength. Start with bodyweight, add a dumbbell when ready.
2. Farmer's carries — Pick up something heavy and walk. That's it. This single exercise builds grip strength, core stability, shoulder health, and cardiovascular endurance. It's the most underrated exercise in existence.
3. Dead hangs — Hang from a bar for 15-30 seconds. It decompresses your spine, opens your shoulders, and builds grip. If you can work up to 60 seconds, your shoulders will thank you for decades.
The 2 you should probably stop:
Crunches — They compress your spine under load in the exact position you're already in all day (hunched over). Do planks, pallof presses, or bird dogs instead.
Heavy behind-the-neck presses — Most people over 50 don't have the shoulder mobility for these. They're an injury waiting to happen. Stick to landmine presses or Arnold presses.
If you want the full program with weekly progressions, mobility work, and a community of people on the same path — that's what After 50 is for.
