The 3 automations that actually save small business owners time (and the 10 that don't)
I spent the last few months testing AI automations across a handful of small businesses — an agency, an ecommerce store, a coaching business. Most "AI automation" content online is fluff. Here's what actually moved the needle:
What worked:
AI-drafted customer replies — not fully automated sending, but a first draft waiting in your inbox. Cuts response time editing from 10 min to 90 seconds.
Meeting/call summarization — feed a transcript in, get action items out. Saves the "re-listen to remember what we said" tax.
Content repurposing — one long-form piece (podcast, blog, call) turned into 5-10 short posts automatically. This is the highest leverage one for anyone doing content.
What didn't work (despite the hype):
Fully autonomous customer support bots — still need a human in the loop or you lose trust fast.
"AI employees" that manage your whole calendar — too brittle, breaks constantly.
Auto-generated blog content at scale — Google can tell, and so can your readers.
The pattern: AI is great at compressing time on tasks that are annoying but require your judgment to finalize. It's bad at fully replacing judgment.
If you're a small business owner drowning in admin work, start with #1-3 above before anything fancier. Happy to answer questions if anyone's stuck on implementation.
