The real reason most 'build an API with AI' tools produce garbage

I spent the last stretch building AIStack Hub, and the thing that kept breaking every prototype was the same mistake: tools that let you "describe an API and get code" skip straight to code generation without ever asking what the service actually needs to do, what data it touches, or what happens when a rate limit gets hit.

That's backwards. The code is the easy part. The part that actually matters is:

  • What's the input/output contract?

  • What third-party credential does this legitimately require (and who has to go get it — because an AI cannot mint you a real YouTube or OpenAI key, full stop)?

  • Where does state live — do you need a database, or is this stateless?

  • What's the isolation boundary once this thing is running next to other people's services?

So AIStack Builder is built around a fixed pipeline: requirement analysis → spec → architecture → code → tests → security review → deploy → docs → endpoint + key → downloadable source. Every generated project ships with a Dockerfile, a real README, and an .env.example with placeholders — never your actual secrets baked in. You can self-host it today or let us run it.

If you're building bot backends, internal tools, or wrappers around a DB you already have, curious what's been the most annoying part of that workflow for you — happy to compare notes.
