How to Start Crocheting From Scratch (No Experience Needed) 🧶
If you've ever wanted to crochet but didn't know where to start, here's a simple beginner roadmap:
What you need:
A 5mm crochet hook (best size for beginners)
Medium-weight yarn (acrylic is cheap and forgiving)
Scissors and a yarn needle
Your first 3 stitches to learn:
Chain stitch — the foundation of everything
Single crochet — the simplest stitch
Double crochet — opens up most patterns
Your first project: A simple dishcloth or scarf. Seriously. It teaches tension, counting, and turning — the 3 things beginners struggle with most.
Once you've got those down, you can start following PDF patterns and making real projects like bags, beanies, and amigurumi toys.
I built Alima Crochet to be the community I wished I had when I started. We have step-by-step tutorials, a library of downloadable PDF patterns, and a chat full of makers who love helping beginners.
