When it comes to incorporating, there's a wealth of information out there, almost too much. When we set out to form our own LLC, we found so much conflicting advice that we were quickly overwhelmed.
That's when a one-stop solution from one of the big players in this category started looking attractive.
We signed up, ready to work through the checklist to starting a business, armed with unbridled enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. Instead, every step led to more questions, and every question led to more add-ons with more fees.
Several hundred dollars later, we thought we'd made it out the other side. Then we discovered the exact services we'd just paid for were essentially free if we'd signed up ourselves. Feeling a little foolish, we got on the chat to haggle for refunds, as the friction started outweighing the gains.
Then, once incorporated, the threatening emails started: file this or risk committing fraud, file that by this deadline or risk a fine. Requirements we'd never even heard of. We next found out that each of us needed to file taxes in our home states, and that road somehow led to incorporating separately in each one. We wish someone had mentioned looking into a foreign LLC instead.
