I work as a sign language interpreter. The people who stall out are not the ones with weak hands. They are the ones who treat this like a language hobby.

Paid work has three gates:

1. You can interpret, not just sign.

Conversation is not the job. The job is taking someone else's meaning, in real time, without adding yourself. If you cannot hold a 10-minute consecutive sample, you are not ready for a booking.

2. You understand the room.

Medical, education, legal, church, freelance community — each one has rules, dress, and liability. Showing up fluent and unprepared is how you lose the second booking.

3. You can be found and trusted.

Agencies and coordinators do not hunt for talent on TikTok. They want a short bio, a setting, proof you show up, and someone who already works who will vouch.

If you are stuck between "I know some ASL" and "I get paid," that gap is the actual training. Skill drills, ethics, assignment prep. Not another vocab list.
