Why most SA luxury car dealers are leaving money on the table online
Been deep in the South African premium/luxury vehicle market lately, and one pattern keeps showing up: dealers with genuinely great inventory (clean BMWs, Range Rovers, Porsches) are still relying almost entirely on walk-ins and word of mouth.
A few things worth fixing if you're a dealer in this space:
1. Photos are doing you dirty. Buyers spending R800k+ on a car want 8-10 images minimum — interior, engine bay, tyres, odometer. Listings with fewer than 5 photos get skipped almost instantly by serious buyers.
2. Response time is your #1 lever. In the luxury segment, buyers are usually cross-shopping 2-3 dealers at once. If you reply in under an hour vs. next-day, you win the sale far more often — even at a similar price.
3. "Verified dealer" trust signals matter more than people think. In a market with a lot of scam listings on classifieds sites, buyers actively filter for dealers who look legitimate and accountable.
4. Location targeting beats broad reach. A bakkie buyer in Polokwane and a Porsche buyer in Sandton are not the same funnel — don't market them the same way.
I started AutoLinkSA to fix this specifically for the premium/luxury segment — a dealer membership marketplace where verified SA dealers list unlimited inventory and get matched with high-intent affluent buyers, instead of competing in the noise of generic classifieds.
