Why I stopped building a 'better browser' and built an AI-native desktop instead

Quick story on why Xenegade OS exists.

I spent about a year trying to build AI tooling as browser extensions and web apps. It never felt right — every AI tool lived in its own tab, its own login, its own disconnected context. You'd have Gemini open in one tab, GPT in another, your actual work in a third, and none of them knew what the others were doing.

So I built Helix as a native Windows executable instead — not a browser layer, an actual desktop environment that sits on top of Windows. One workspace, 15 first-party apps, 46 real integrations, and a three-tier AI router (Bronze/Gemini, Silver/GPT, Gold/Claude) that picks the right model per task automatically.

The rule I built the whole thing around: if a button is on screen, it works. No demo mode, no "coming soon" panels, no fake integrations to pad a feature list. I'd rather ship 15 apps that all actually function than 40 that half-work.

It's a one-person studio — no team, no investors, no funding round to justify. Just software that has to work because I use it every day too.

If you're a Windows user tired of AI tools living in disconnected tabs, that's who I built this for. Happy to answer questions on the stack or the AI routing logic below.
