What I learned making 100 lip glosses by hand before selling a single one

I started Be Well with 100 handmade lip glosses. No factory, no investors, no team — just me figuring out formulas, packaging, and pricing in my kitchen.

A few things I wish someone told me before I started:

1. Make a small batch first, always. 100 units felt like a lot until I realized it's the perfect number to test flavors, finishes, and pricing without betting the farm. If something flops, you've lost a weekend, not a business.

2. Your first customers aren't random — they're your biggest fans. I didn't run ads for batch one. I sold to people who already followed along on the process. That's the real unlock: people buy the story before they buy the product.

3. Community > storefront, especially early. Instead of just listing products, I built a free VIP space where people get first access to drops and discounts before anything goes public. It costs nothing to join, but it means my next 60 lip glosses aren't going out to strangers — they're going to people already invested in watching this grow.

4. Think bigger than the SKU. Lip gloss is the entry point, not the ceiling. The plan is to build toward something like a concept store — beauty, wellness, eventually clothing — but you don't get there by skipping the "sell 100 units by hand" phase. You get there because of it.

If you're building a physical product brand from zero, happy to swap notes. And if you want to watch the next drop happen in real time, our VIP community is free to join.
