5 watches under $300 that look like $3,000
Most people overpay for watches. Not because the watches are better — but because they don't know where to look.
I've spent years collecting and studying timepieces, and the gap between what something costs and what it looks like has never been wider.
Here's what I've learned:
1. Movement matters more than brand name. A $200 watch with a Miyota 9015 automatic movement keeps time as well as watches 10x the price.
2. Sapphire crystal is non-negotiable. It's the difference between a watch that looks new in 5 years vs. one covered in micro-scratches after 6 months.
3. Bracelet quality is the tell. Cheap watches use hollow end links and rattle on your wrist. The good affordable ones use solid links with proper micro-adjustment.
4. Skip the hype brands. The best value watches come from brands most people haven't heard of. That's a feature, not a bug.
5. Buy fewer, buy better. Three great watches beat a drawer full of mediocre ones.
