After 20 years of training beauty professionals, I've seen the same patterns over and over.

1. Practising on clients before they're ready.

You wouldn't perform on stage without rehearsal. Yet so many stylists and therapists try a new technique on a paying client after watching one YouTube video. Practice on mannequin heads, practice on friends, practice on yourself. Get 50 reps in before you touch a client's hair or skin.

2. Chasing trends instead of mastering foundations.

Balayage is gorgeous. But if your sectioning is sloppy and your colour theory is weak, no trending technique will save you. The best colourists I know spent years perfecting the basics before they ever went freehand.

3. Learning in isolation.

The fastest way to level up is to be around people who are better than you. Find a community. Get honest feedback. Watch other professionals work. The salon chair can be lonely — but growth happens in groups.
