3 billing errors that quietly cost retirees $30-80/month (and how to catch them)
I've spent a lot of time going through utility bills line by line with people on fixed incomes, and the same mistakes show up over and over. None of these require a lawyer or a dispute — just five minutes with your bill.
1. Estimated reads instead of actual meter reads. If your electric or gas provider missed a meter read, they guess your usage based on past months. In shoulder seasons (spring/fall) this estimate is almost always too high. Look for the word "estimated" on your bill — if you see it two months in a row, call and request an actual read.
2. Tiered rate creep. Many electric providers charge more per kWh once you cross a usage threshold (e.g. 1000 kWh). A single hot week running the AC can push you into the higher tier for the entire billing cycle. Check if your provider offers a flat-rate or budget billing plan — it smooths this out.
3. Leftover fees from an old plan or promo that expired. Water and gas providers especially are bad about this — a "service fee" or old assistance program charge keeps appearing after the program ended. Anything you don't recognize, call and ask them to explain the line item in plain language. If they can't, ask for it removed.
None of this requires switching providers or fighting anyone — it's just knowing what to look for. If you want a second pair of eyes on your bills each month, that's exactly what I do over in Bill Budget Coaching.
