5 food photography mistakes killing your restaurant's Instagram

I've shot for dozens of restaurants and the same mistakes keep coming up. Here's what I see:

1. Overhead lighting is not your friend.

That fluorescent ceiling light makes everything look flat and sickly. Natural window light from the side is free and 10x better.

2. Too much on the plate.

Overcrowding kills the composition. Let each element breathe. Negative space is your best friend.

3. Wrong angles for the wrong dishes.

Flat dishes (pizza, salads) → shoot from above. Tall dishes (burgers, stacked pancakes) → shoot at 45° or eye level. Wrong angle = wrong vibe.

4. No hero element.

Every photo needs one thing that grabs attention first. A drizzle of sauce, a sprinkle of herbs, steam rising. Give people a reason to stop scrolling.

5. Posting without editing.

Even a quick brightness/contrast adjustment makes a massive difference. Raw phone photos look amateur — and your food deserves better.

If you're a restaurant owner and want to stop guessing with your food content, that's exactly what we do at BiteBright Media. Professional photography that actually drives orders.
