The beginner's guide to picking your first butterfly knife

If you're new to balisongs, the options are overwhelming — and most beginner guides just tell you to buy whatever's cheap.

Here's what actually matters when picking your first butterfly knife:

1. Weight & balance over price

A $30 knife that feels balanced will teach you more than a $100 knife that's too heavy in the handles. Feel matters.

2. Latch or no latch

For learning flips, a latch-less trainer lets you focus on the move without getting caught. Start latch-less.

3. Trainer vs live blade

If you're learning, get a trainer first. You will drop it. A lot.

4. Steel type

Budget: 440C stainless. Mid-range: D2 tool steel. Don't overthink this until you know you're serious.

5. Handles

Channel handles are safer for beginners. Sandwich handles look cooler but expose more blade.

At BladeSpin, every knife we stock is curated with this in mind — nothing that'll frustrate a newcomer, nothing that'll bore an experienced flipper.
