Stop applying Subdivision Surface

The modifier is the point.

Subdivision Surface, Mirror, Bevel, Solidify — they are live instructions. Change Levels tomorrow. Change Thickness after the render. Apply them and you own every extra vertex with no off switch.

Apply when you need real faces: a UV on a Boolean hole, an export, a tool that cannot see through the stack. Not because the lamp looks finished.

If you must apply, duplicate first. Keep the live one.

Stop lighting from the front

Beginners put the light above the camera. Everything goes flat. The model looks like a toy even when the topology is fine.

Put one area light to the right of the object, a little above it. Drop the world color to almost black. Leave empty space in the frame so the thing sits in a studio, not a mugshot.

That is how a cheap model looks expensive. Works for a mug. Works for a lamp. Works for a chair. The object can stay simple. The light cannot.

If your render is noisy, you do not need more polygons. You need the shadow on the left side to be allowed to exist.

The 5 Blender settings beginners should change on day one

Most people quit Blender in the first hour because the defaults fight them. Change these before you model anything.

1. Navigation

Middle mouse orbits. Scroll zooms. Shift + middle mouse pans. That's 90% of moving around. If you only have a trackpad, turn on Emulate 3 Button Mouse under Preferences > Input.

2. Object Mode vs Edit Mode

G, R, and S do nothing useful until you know which mode you're in. Tab into Edit Mode to move vertices. Tab back out to move the whole object. If you selected the cube and it still won't move, you're in the wrong mode.

3. Your first render is black

You have no light, or the camera isn't pointing at the cube. Numpad 0 is camera view. Add > Light > Area, pull it above the cube, hit F12.

4. Save a new file immediately

The default scene is a template, not your project. File > Save As before you delete the cube "just to see."

5. Turn on Auto Save

Preferences > Save & Load > Auto Save. Blender will crash. This is not a maybe.

Do those five, then make something ugly on purpose. Ugly and finished beats pretty and abandoned.
