Most kids don't hate fishing. They hate the way adults run the trip.
The first family fishing trip usually dies the same death.
You pack like you're going for 8 hours. You pick a "real" spot. You buy a cartoon rod. You stay until somebody cries, usually the kid, sometimes you.
I've watched this enough times to be boring about the fix.
90 minutes. Park to car. If it's still fun, add 20. You do not add an hour.
A pond, a dock, or a pier. Fish that live next to the boards. Not a river. Not a hike. Not your secret hole.
Bait on a cheap spincast combo. Worms. A bobber. The button reel a 7-year-old can actually use. Leave the tackle box at home.
Leave when they ask. Twice is enough. Ending early is how you get a kid who wants to go again. Staying is how you get a kid who hates Saturdays with you.
That's the whole sport at the start. Not skill. Not gear. A short win.
I wrote it down as a course so parents stop improvising a bad day: Take Your Kid Fishing. One time, ten bucks, built for ages 4–12.
If you've already blown a first trip — good. The second one is the one that sticks. Keep it short.
