Why 90% of people never learn a muscle-up (and how YOU will)

I see it every day at the park. People who've been trying to do a muscle-up for months. They swing, they kip, they force it — and it doesn't work.

The problem? They skip steps.

A muscle-up isn't an exercise. It's the result of a chain of progressions your body needs to master. Without that foundation, you're trying to build a house without a base.

The real progression to your first muscle-up

Step 1: Explosive pull-ups

You don't need to get your chin over the bar — you need to pull your chest to the bar. Can't do 5 chest-to-bar pull-ups? You're not ready yet.

Step 2: Straight bar dips

Most people forget this. The top portion of the muscle-up IS a straight bar dip. Train this separately.

Step 3: The transition

This is where it goes wrong. The transition from pull to push is a separate skill. Train this with band-assisted reps or on a low bar.

Step 4: Combine

Only when you've mastered all these components do you start combining them.

This is how I teach it at BodyFlow Academy. No shortcuts, no magic — just the right progression in the right order.

Every trick you want to learn — handstand, planche, front lever — has a progression path like this. And if you follow that path, it's just a matter of time.
