Why 'gut feel' bettors go broke and data bettors don't
Ran the numbers on our own bet log going back two seasons, and the pattern is brutal but simple: the losing stretches almost always came from bets we felt good about, not the ones the model liked.
A few things that actually moved our ROI once we started tracking seriously:
Closing Line Value (CLV) matters more than win rate. You can hit 55% and still be a losing bettor long-term if you're consistently getting worse numbers than the closing line. Track it religiously.
Bankroll management beats "hot hand" sizing. Flat 1-2 units per play, scaled only with confidence tiers we define in advance — never after a winning streak.
Cross-sport diversification smooths variance. NFL Sundays are fun but concentrating your whole bankroll on one slate is how a bad week wipes out a good month.
Write down the reasoning before the bet, not after. If you can't articulate the edge in one sentence before kickoff, it's not a real read — it's a hunch.
We built our whole shop (Bonafide Bets) around treating this like a business, not a hobby — data-driven picks, transparent records, real bankroll rules. Happy to talk shop with anyone grinding through this stuff too.
