The 5-Minute Screen Time Audit That Changes Everything
Most people guess how much time they spend on social media. They're almost always wrong — by 2-3 hours per day.
Here's a quick audit you can do right now that takes less than 5 minutes. No apps to download. No account needed.
The Audit
iPhone:
Settings → Screen Time → See All Activity → select "Week"
Android:
Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Dashboard
Write down these three numbers:
Total daily average (all apps combined)
Your #1 app and its daily average
Total pickups per day (how many times you unlocked your phone)
What the numbers mean:
Daily Screen Time | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
Under 2 hours | You have decent habits — but probably still have 1 app that's a time sink |
2–4 hours | You're in the majority. Small boundary changes will free up 1-2 hours daily |
4–6 hours | Social media is running your schedule. Notification batching alone will cut this by 30% |
6+ hours | You're spending a full workday on your phone. But the fix is simpler than you think |
The one change that makes the biggest difference:
Turn off all non-human notifications.
That means: keep texts and calls. Turn off everything else — every app, every "someone liked your post," every "trending near you."
Do this for 48 hours. You'll pick up your phone 40-60% less. That's not a guess — that's what the research shows, and it's what I see with every person I work with.
Why this works:
Your phone is designed to interrupt you. Every notification is a slot machine pull — maybe it's important, maybe it's not. Your brain can't resist checking. Remove the trigger, and the compulsive checking stops on its own.
This is just one technique from the full system I teach in the Social Media Boundary Setting Bootcamp. The course covers app time limits, notification batching, focus modes, digital detox protocols, and how to build a personalized boundary system that runs on autopilot.
If your screen time number surprised you — that's the wake-up call. What you do next is up to you.
