Why 90% of March Madness Brackets Lose (And How to Build One That Doesn't)
Every year, tens of millions of people fill out March Madness brackets. Almost all of them lose.
Not because they're unlucky. Because they're guessing.

The Problem With How People Pick Brackets
Most people pick brackets the same way:
Go with their gut on upsets
Pick their favorite team further than they should
Copy what ESPN analysts say
Choose based on team name, mascot, or "vibes"
There's no math. No system. No edge.
What Actually Works: Expected Value
The only approach that generates a repeatable edge in bracket contests is Expected Value (EV) analysis — the same framework used by professional sports bettors and DFS players.
The concept is simple:
A bracket pick is +EV if: (Win Probability × Points) × (1 / Field Ownership%) > your average expectation
When you apply this to every single game in the bracket — all 63 picks — something powerful happens. You stop asking "who will win?" and start asking "does picking this team give me an edge over the field?"
The Three Things EV Bracket Builders Know
1. Vegas lines encode win probabilities. Moneylines can be converted to implied win percentages. A team at -180 has a ~64% implied win probability. Chain those probabilities round by round and you have a mathematical bracket, not a guessed one.
2. Seed matchups have 40 years of historical data. 12-seeds beat 5-seeds about 35% of the time. 11-seeds win about 37% of the time. This data should anchor every upset decision you make.
3. Field ownership is the multiplier. A pick only has value if your field isn't making it at the same rate. A 12-seed upset that 34% of the field picks and hits 35% of the time is barely +EV. But if it hits at 35% and only 20% of the field picks it? That's a massive leverage point.

Bracket EV Lab
This is exactly what we built Bracket EV Lab around.
The full system teaches you:
How to convert Vegas lines to win probabilities for every game
How to use a Google Sheets probability matrix to calculate EV for all 63 picks
How to automate odds fetching with Python and The-Odds-API so your model updates in real-time
How to set line movement alerts so you catch injury news before the field adjusts
How to select the right contest type (GPP vs. cash) and build the right bracket for each
This isn't a pick service. It's a framework for thinking about brackets correctly — one you can apply every year.
If you're serious about building an edge in March Madness, this is what that looks like.
