The cold DM that landed me a $3K/month retainer at 19
I'm going to break down the exact outreach strategy that got me my first real retainer client. Not the $500/month ones — the one that actually changed the trajectory of my agency.
I was 19, running Flowryse out of Tablelands, QLD (population: not many). I had two clients paying me barely enough to cover my phone bill. I needed a win.
Here's what I did differently.
I stopped pitching services. I started pitching problems.
Every other agency kid on Instagram is sending "Hey, I noticed your Google Ads could be improved, I'd love to help you grow." That message gets deleted. I know because I sent about 200 of them myself.
What worked was this: I'd spend 20 minutes actually researching a business. Not surface-level — I'd check their Google Maps ranking, look at their reviews, screenshot their competitors who were outranking them, and put it in a short Loom video.
No pitch. Just "hey, noticed this, thought you'd want to see it."
The response rate went from 2% to about 15%. Not because I was smoother. Because I was actually useful before asking for anything.
The Melbourne electrical company that became my biggest case study came from this exact approach. I showed the owner that three competitors were outranking him on Google Maps despite having fewer reviews and worse websites. He replied in 11 minutes.
Three weeks later he was on a $3K/month retainer. Four months later we had him in the top 3 on Maps and he asked me to pause his ads because he had too many leads.
The uncomfortable truth about agency outreach:
Most people fail at cold outreach because they're trying to sell. They're not trying to help. The DM that works isn't the one with the best copy — it's the one where you've actually done something useful for the person before they've paid you a cent.
That's it. That's the whole strategy.
I wrote a 51-page playbook breaking down everything else — the pricing, the delivery, the systems, the months I nearly quit. It's $47 if you want the full picture. But this post alone should change how you think about outreach.
I'm 20. I run a real agency. I'm not selling you a lifestyle — I'm telling you what actually worked.
