The $600 brake job scam — and how to never pay it again

Had a shop quote me $620 for front brakes last year. Pads, rotors, labor. I did it myself in my driveway for $85 in parts and about 2 hours.

Here's the thing most people don't realize: brake jobs are one of the easiest repairs on any car. You don't need a lift. You don't need special tools. You need a jack, a lug wrench, a socket set, and about 30 minutes of learning.

Quick breakdown of what a typical front brake job looks like:

  • Jack up the car, remove the wheel

  • Pull 2 bolts to remove the caliper

  • Slide the old rotor off, slide the new one on

  • Compress the piston, slap in new pads

  • Bolt it back together

That's it. Shops charge $300-800 for something that takes a couple hours in the garage with a YouTube video or a good guide.

I put together a complete walkthrough covering pads, rotors, calipers, and full brake fluid flushes — the whole system, front to back. Written for people who've never touched a wrench before.

Stop overpaying. Your brakes aren't that complicated.
