If you have acne or acne scars, sunscreen is non-negotiable — here's why
Most people think sunscreen is just about preventing sunburns. But if you're dealing with acne or acne scarring, skipping SPF is one of the worst things you can do for your skin.
Here's what's actually happening when you go without it:
🔴 Sun exposure makes acne scars darker and harder to fade
When UV rays hit a healing or scarred area, they trigger your skin to produce excess melanin. That means those red, brown, or purple marks left behind after a breakout? They get DARKER and stick around much longer. What could've faded in a few weeks now takes months — or becomes permanent hyperpigmentation.
🔴 UV damage causes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
PIH is the discoloration left after acne heals. It's already one of the hardest things to treat. Without sunscreen, every minute of sun exposure is making those dark marks worse. This is especially true for deeper skin tones, where PIH tends to be more stubborn.
🔴 Sunlight breaks down collagen — slowing scar healing
Acne scars (especially pitted or indented scars) need collagen to repair. UV rays actively destroy collagen and prevent your skin from rebuilding. You're literally working against your own healing process every time you skip SPF.
🔴 Many acne treatments make your skin MORE sun-sensitive
If you're using retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, or getting professional treatments like chemical peels or microneedling, your skin is thinner and more vulnerable to UV damage. Without sunscreen, you risk burns, irritation, and even more scarring.
What to do about it:
Wear SPF 30+ every single morning — rain or shine, indoors or out
Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that won't clog pores or trigger breakouts
Look for mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone
Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors
Be extra diligent if you're on any active treatments
My top sunscreen recommendations for acne-prone skin:
☀️ Colorscience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield — A lightweight, 100% mineral SPF that layers beautifully under makeup and won't clog pores. It also has built-in environmental protection against blue light and pollution. A go-to for clients who want serious UV defense without the greasy feel.
☀️ Face Reality Daily SPF 30 Lotion — Specifically formulated for acne-prone skin. This one is non-comedogenic, oil-free, and designed to work alongside acne treatment products without causing breakouts. If you're on an active acne program, this is the sunscreen I trust.
The bottom line: Every product you use to fight acne and fade scars is working harder when you wear sunscreen — and being undone when you don't. SPF is the foundation of any acne recovery plan.
If you're struggling with acne or scarring and don't know where to start, I offer 1-on-1 virtual skincare consultations where we build a routine that works WITH your skin, not against it. 💛
