5 things my kid learned from Lego that school never taught them
My 8-year-old can't sit still in math class. But give her a pile of Lego bricks and a challenge — "build a bridge that holds a water bottle" — and she'll spend 3 hours in deep focus.
Here's what she's picked up just from building:
1. Structural thinking — She now understands why triangles are stronger than squares. Not because a textbook told her, but because her bridge collapsed twice before she figured it out.
2. Budgeting & constraints — When I limit her to 50 bricks, she has to plan ahead. She counts, prioritizes, and makes tradeoffs. That's resource management.
3. Iterative design — Her first version always fails. But she doesn't cry about it anymore — she says "okay, version 2." That mindset is worth more than any grade.
4. Spatial reasoning — She can rotate 3D objects in her head now. Her teacher noticed it in geometry before I did.
5. Patience — Following a 200-step instruction set teaches delayed gratification better than any lecture.
