Built an AI homework helper for high schoolers this week and the biggest lesson so far: the kids who just paste their question and copy the answer don't retain anything — and their grades don't move.

The ones who actually improve do three things differently:

1. They ask why, not just what. "Why does the negative sign flip the inequality?" beats "what's the answer to #7."

2. They ask for a worked example first, then try a similar problem themselves before checking.

3. They use it right after class while the concept is fresh, not the night before the test when they're cramming.

AI tutoring isn't a cheat code — it's a tool that scales one-on-one explanation to anyone, at 1am, for less than a coffee. But the study habits still matter more than the tool.

If you're building anything ed-tech, this is the design challenge: make the shortcut path (copy the answer) less appealing than the path that actually teaches.
