The 5 exercises every beginner should learn first (and why most programs get this wrong)
Most beginner workout programs throw 15+ exercises at you on day one. That's a recipe for overwhelm, bad form, and quitting by week 3.
Here's what actually works — 5 compound movements that build real strength and confidence:
1. Goblet Squat — Way better than a barbell squat for beginners. The weight in front keeps your chest up and teaches proper depth naturally.
2. Romanian Deadlift (RDL) — This is how you build your hamstrings and glutes without destroying your lower back. Start with dumbbells, not a barbell.
3. Dumbbell Bench Press — Dumbbells > barbell when you're starting out. Each arm works independently so you build balanced strength.
4. Cable Row — Forget bent-over rows for now. Cables keep constant tension and are way more forgiving on your back.
5. Overhead Press — Standing, with dumbbells. Builds shoulders, core stability, and real-world functional strength.
Master these 5 for 4-6 weeks before adding anything else. Progressive overload on fewer exercises beats random variety every time.
