5 things nobody tells you about preparing your body for pregnancy

Most women start thinking about health after they find out they're pregnant. But the 3-6 months before conception might be the most important window of all.

Here are 5 things I wish someone had told me earlier:

1. Your iron levels matter more than you think

Low iron before pregnancy = exhaustion during pregnancy. Get your ferritin checked, not just hemoglobin. Aim for 50+ ng/mL.

2. Fitness isn't about losing weight — it's about building a foundation

Pregnancy puts massive demands on your core, pelvic floor, and cardiovascular system. Strength training now = easier pregnancy later. Think squats, deadlifts, and diaphragmatic breathing.

3. Sleep quality > sleep quantity

Disrupted sleep tanks your hormones. Blue light, late caffeine, inconsistent schedules — these all hurt fertility. Fix your sleep hygiene before you start tracking ovulation.

4. Stress isn't just "in your head"

Cortisol directly impacts progesterone. If you're running on stress, your body deprioritizes reproduction. This is biology, not woo.

5. Start prenatal vitamins at least 3 months before trying

Folate needs time to build up. Don't wait for a positive test — your baby's neural tube forms before most women even know they're pregnant.

I built BumpReady to help women get their body, mind, and life truly ready before baby. If you're in that 6-12 month window before trying, this is for you.
