You can't switch off after work because your body never got the all-clear

Most burned-out professionals try to think their way into rest. They close the laptop, then replay the meeting, the Slack thread, the thing they should have said.

That is not a mindset problem. Your nervous system is still running the workday. Heart rate stays up. Jaw stays tight. Sleep gets light. Meditation apps fail because they ask a body in fight-or-flight to sit still and watch it.

What actually works is a downshift, not a pep talk:

  1. Lengthen the exhale. In for 4, out for 6. Two minutes. This is a mechanical signal, not a spiritual one.

  2. Drop your shoulders and unclench your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Your brain copies the body.

  3. Do one boring physical thing — wash a mug, walk to the end of the street — before you pick up your phone.

If you still feel wired after that, you do not need more willpower. You need a protocol you can run the same night, not another 20-minute sit.
