Spent the last few months building templates for solo creators, and there's one pattern I keep seeing: people blame their content for looking amateur when it's actually their layout system.

A few things that instantly make any Notion dashboard or Canva deck look more professional:

1. Consistent spacing grid — most free templates use inconsistent padding. Pick one spacing unit (8px, 16px, 24px) and never deviate.

2. One accent color, used sparingly — amateurs use their brand color everywhere. Pros use it for 1-2 focal points per page and let neutrals do the rest.

3. Typography hierarchy with only 2 fonts — a display font for headers, one workhorse font for everything else. Three+ fonts reads as unstructured.

4. Kill the default icons — default emoji/icon sets are the fastest way to look like everyone else's Notion page.
