Most presentations look the same — white background, bullet points, stock photos. Here's how I use Canva to make slides that actually grab attention.

1. Start with the layout, not the content

Open Canva, pick a presentation template that has strong visual hierarchy — big bold headers, clean spacing. Don't start typing on a blank slide. The template gives you structure so your content has room to breathe.

2. Use one accent color, max

Pick a single bold color from your brand or topic (I usually pull one from the logo or subject). Apply it to headlines and key stats only. Everything else stays neutral — black, white, or light grey. This instantly makes your deck look intentional.

3. Replace bullet points with icons + short phrases

Canva has thousands of free icons. Instead of writing "We increased revenue by 40%," use a graph icon next to "↑ 40% revenue." Less text = more impact.

4. Use Canva's "Brand Kit" even if you don't have a brand

Upload your fonts and colors into Brand Kit. Now every new slide auto-matches. Consistency is what separates amateur decks from professional ones.

5. The background image trick

Find a relevant photo, drop it in as the slide background, then add a semi-transparent dark overlay on top. Put your white text over it. Instant cinematic slide — takes 30 seconds.

6. Animations? Keep them subtle

Canva lets you animate elements. Use "Fade" or "Rise" — never "Bounce" or "Tumble." Your professor or client will thank you.
