Why 90% of Swimmers Have a Broken Catch (And the 3-Step Fix)

I've coached hundreds of swimmers from age-group to masters, and the #1 technical flaw I see is the same every time: a dropped elbow on the catch.


Here's the thing — most swimmers don't even know they're doing it. They think they're pulling water, but they're actually slicing through it with zero resistance. Their hand and elbow drop together like a straight lever, and they wonder why they're working harder but not going faster.


The fix is simpler than you think. Three steps:


Step 1: Fingertips first. When you initiate the catch, only your fingertips press down. Not your whole arm. Just the tips. This starts the chain reaction.


Step 2: Elbow stays high. As your fingertips drop, your forearm angles down — but your elbow stays near the surface. Now your entire forearm is facing backward. That's 3x the surface area of just your hand.


Step 3: Pull the barrel. Imagine reaching over a barrel and pulling it toward your belly. That mental image locks in the high-elbow position under fatigue.


The fastest swimmers in the world — Popov, Thorpe, Dressel — all share this catch pattern. It's not genetic. It's trained.
