Can't Center Clay? You're Not Alone — Here's the Fix

Every beginner potter hits the same wall: centering.

You sit down at the wheel, slam your clay down, and... it wobbles. You push harder. It wobbles more. You add water. Now it's a slimy mess that still wobbles.

I've been there. So has every potter who's ever lived.

After years of teaching wheel throwing, I developed a systematic method that breaks centering into exactly 10 throws — each with a specific purpose:

  • Throws 1-2: Anchor the clay (most beginners skip this properly)

  • Throws 3-4: Cone up to align vertically

  • Throws 5-6: Cone down to align horizontally

  • Throws 7-8: Fine-tune with sensitivity, not force

  • Throws 9-10: Lock in and open

The secret? Centering isn't about hand strength. It's about body position, wheel speed, and a repeatable sequence.

Most of my students center consistently within 4-6 weeks using this method — even if they've been struggling for months on their own.

I'm now teaching this live on Whop with weekly video critiques where I watch YOUR technique and tell you exactly what to fix.

If the wheel has been beating you, come learn the system. 🎯
