Your Tesla will not charge at most public stations. Here's why.

Tesla owners keep finding this out the hard way.

You pull into a hotel, a mall, or an apartment lot. There's a charger. It's even labeled "EV." Then you get out and the plug is the round J1772 connector — not Tesla's NACS port.

That's not a broken station. That's the rest of the country.

The short version

  • Tesla Superchargers: your car already fits.

  • Most other public chargers in North America: J1772.

  • Home wall units from ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, Emporia, etc.: usually J1772.

  • Hotels, workplaces, city lots: J1772 more often than not.

Without an adapter, those stations are just parking spots with a cable.

What actually works

A NACS to J1772 adapter is a 10-second fix. Adapter on the station cable, then into the Tesla. No app, no firmware, no "Tesla network" required.

Keep it in the frunk. The trip you need it on is never the one you planned.

That's why ChargeKit exists — not because Tesla charging is bad, but because the rest of the charging world never switched.
