5 spirits every beginner should try (and why most people start wrong)
Most people's introduction to spirits is a bad vodka shot at a party. That's like judging all food by a microwave meal.
Here's where I'd actually start if I was learning from scratch:
1. Bourbon — Sweet, approachable, caramel and vanilla notes. Try it neat with a single ice cube. It's the gateway spirit.
2. Reposado Tequila — Not the stuff you did shots of at uni. A proper reposado is smooth, slightly oaky, with agave sweetness. Sip it.
3. London Dry Gin — Juniper-forward, botanical, and the backbone of the most iconic cocktails. Make a proper G&T with good tonic and fresh lime.
4. Blended Scotch — Before you go single malt, start blended. Lighter, more approachable. Add a splash of water to open it up.
5. Aged Rum — The most underrated spirit category. Dark, rich, spiced naturally from barrel aging. Mix it with ginger beer or sip it straight.
The trick isn't spending loads of money — it's learning to actually taste what's in your glass. That's what we teach at Cheers Liquor School.
