The trick that changed everything for me — I take drama class, and I started treating historical events like scenes instead of bullet points. Who's the protagonist? What's the conflict? What's the twist? Suddenly the Treaty of Versailles isn't a list of clauses, it's a story about a country backed into a corner making a decision that blows up 20 years later.

Three things that actually work for retention:

1. Turn dates into cause-and-effect chains, not isolated facts

2. Assign a "character" to every major event — even nations and movements have motives

3. Say it out loud like you're explaining it to someone, don't just re-read notes silently
