3 Wound Patterns That Get Misidentified as Coyote Kills (And What They Actually Are)

If you work in livestock loss assessment, you've seen the default diagnosis: "coyote." It's the path of least resistance for vets and wildlife officers who aren't trained in differential wound analysis. Here are three patterns that routinely get misattributed — and what the evidence actually points to.


1. Clean paired punctures with minimal tissue disruption


Coyotes tear. Their jaw mechanics produce ragged, lateral wound channels with significant tissue displacement. When you see paired punctures at consistent 28-35mm spacing with minimal surrounding damage, you're not looking at a canid attack. The wound is too precise and the spacing too uniform. This pattern appears repeatedly in anomalous livestock death clusters across northern Mexico, southern Texas, and Puerto Rico.


2. Complete exsanguination without proportional external bleeding


A coyote kill bleeds. Extensively. When necropsy reveals near-total blood loss but the scene shows minimal pooling or spatter, the predator-prey interaction model breaks down. Conventional predators don't have the mechanism for this. If your scene documentation shows dry ground under a fully exsanguinated animal, you need to look beyond the standard catalog.


3. Absent defensive markers on the livestock


Prey animals fight. They kick, they run, they vocalize. Coyote attacks produce trampled ground, scattered hair/wool, broken fencing, and alarm responses from nearby animals. When none of that exists — when the kill is surgically quiet — the behavioral profile doesn't match any conventional predator in the Americas.


What this means for your fieldwork: If you're documenting livestock losses and these patterns show up, running it through a standard predator checklist will give you a false match. You need a differential diagnosis framework built for anomalous cases.
