The 3 numbers every budget car buyer should know before they negotiate
Most people walk onto a lot knowing one number: the sticker price. That's the wrong number to focus on. After years of doing this, here are the three that actually matter:
1. Out-the-door price, not monthly payment.
Dealers love talking monthly payments because they can stretch any price into a number that sounds affordable. Always ask "what's the total out-the-door price including tax, title, and fees?" before you talk financing.
2. Real trade-in value, not what you "feel" it's worth.
Pull your VIN's actual market value (not the inflated number from a random online estimator) before you walk in. If a dealer's trade-in offer is more than 10-15% under that, you have room to push back — or sell privately instead.
3. Total cost of financing, not just the APR.
A low APR over 72 months can cost more than a slightly higher APR over 48. Always ask for the total interest paid over the life of the loan, not just the rate.
We built our whole model around these three things — transparent out-the-door pricing, honest trade-in numbers, and financing that doesn't bury you in interest. If you're in the market for a budget-friendly used car (buying, selling, or just want to know where you stand), we're taking free, no-obligation quote requests right now.
