The pricing mistake killing most 'done-for-you template' businesses

I've reviewed a lot of contract template shops before building ClauseCraft, and almost all of them make the same mistake: they sell templates as a one-time download.

Here's why that caps you at a few hundred dollars a month no matter how good your templates are:

1. One-time buyers never come back. A $47 contract pack sale is a dead transaction. You have to find a brand new customer every single time to keep revenue flowing.

2. Templates go stale. Laws change, business models change, your buyer's needs change. If you're not updating and re-delivering, you're leaving money on the table that a subscription would capture automatically.

3. You're competing on price, not value. When it's a one-time purchase, buyers compare you to the cheapest PDF pack on Etsy. When it's an ongoing service (updates, new templates monthly, a delivery SOP, support), you're competing on outcomes.

The fix that actually works: package your templates + a simple delivery SOP + monthly updates as a subscription. Even at $30-50/month, 100 members is $3-5K MRR — and retention is the only number you need to move, not constant new-customer acquisition.

The hard part isn't writing the templates. It's the packaging, the pricing, and the SOP that makes delivery repeatable. That's the exact gap most people selling templates never close.

Curious if anyone here has tried subscription-izing a template or done-for-you offer — what worked, what didn't?
