The three-sentence test that tells you if your demo opening is losing the room

Most founders lose the room in the first 90 seconds without realizing it.

Here's a quick test you can run on your current demo opening right now — no signup required, no frameworks to memorize.

Write down the first three sentences you say after "thanks for joining."

Now check each one against these three questions:

Sentence 1 — Does it name who's in the room?

Not "thanks for your time" or "I'm excited to show you this." Does it prove you know who you're talking to and what they're trying to figure out? If your first sentence could work for any audience, it's not doing its job.

Sentence 2 — Does it state the one thing you'll cover?

Not three things. Not "a quick overview." One specific claim or outcome. Investors and buyers both need to know what to listen for. If they don't know what to track, they stop tracking.

Sentence 3 — Does it give them a reason to stay for the next 60 seconds?

A number, a surprising result, a tension they recognize. Something that makes the next minute feel worth their attention. Not a roadmap slide. Not "let me share my screen."

How to score yourself:

  • 3/3 → Your opening is doing real work. Focus on delivery and timing.

  • 2/3 → You're close. The weak sentence is probably where you lose people.

  • 1/3 or 0/3 → Your demo is starting cold. The room is orienting itself without your help, which means they're building their own (wrong) narrative.

Most founders score 1/3 the first time they try this honestly.

If you want the full system for fixing all three sentences — plus the timing, the attention-reading signals, and the rehearsal method — that's what the ebook covers in 7 chapters.
