The 3-second rule that changed how I talk to strangers

Most introverts overthink the first move. You see someone you want to talk to, and your brain starts running simulations. "What do I say?" "What if it's awkward?" "They look busy."

Here's what actually works: the 3-second rule.

When you notice someone you want to talk to, you have 3 seconds to say anything before your brain talks you out of it. Not something clever. Not a perfect opener. Just words.

"Hey, I like your jacket."

"Is this seat taken?"

"What are you drinking?"

The content of what you say matters way less than the fact that you said it. Most people are flattered someone approached them at all. The awkwardness you're imagining? It's almost entirely in your head.

I used to be the person standing in the corner at every event, rehearsing openers I'd never use. The 3-second rule broke that loop for me.

Try it once this week. Just once. You'll be surprised.

I write about stuff like this every week at ClearSpeak — practical communication tips for people who are tired of feeling invisible in conversations.
