5 Pronunciation Mistakes That Keep You Below IELTS Band 7

If you're stuck at Band 6-6.5 in IELTS Speaking, your pronunciation might be the bottleneck. Here are the 5 most common mistakes I see after coaching hundreds of candidates — and the fix for each.

1. Stressing Every Word Equally

English is a stress-timed language. Content words get emphasized. Function words should be reduced.

"I THINK THAT EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT"

"I think that eduCAtion is very imPORtant"

2. Flat Intonation

Many candidates speak in a monotone. Practice the "news anchor" technique — read headlines as if presenting the evening news. Exaggerate at first, then dial it back.

3. No Connected Speech

Native speakers link words: "pick it up" → /pɪ-kɪ-tʌp/. If every word sounds separate, practice saying common phrases as one continuous sound.

4. Mispronouncing High-Frequency Words

Word

Common Error

Correct

comfortable

com-FOR-ta-ble

CUMF-ter-bul

interesting

in-ter-EST-ing

IN-trest-ing

development

de-VE-lop-ment

di-VEL-up-munt

5. Rising Intonation on Statements

Making statements sound like questions signals uncertainty. Record yourself — every statement should end with pitch going down.

Pronunciation is 25% of your Speaking score. Fix these five patterns and you'll sound noticeably more natural.
