The 3-second rule that makes clips go viral

I've analyzed hundreds of viral short-form clips across TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. The pattern is dead simple:

The first 3 seconds decide everything.

Here's what the top creators do differently:

1. Pattern interrupt, not intro. Nobody cares who you are yet. Open with a bold claim, a shocking visual, or a question that makes people pause mid-scroll. "Stop editing your clips wrong" hits harder than "Hey guys, welcome back."

2. Show the result first. If you're teaching something, show the finished product in frame one. The before/after hook works because curiosity > patience.

3. Cut the dead air. If there's even half a second of nothing happening at the start, you've already lost. Trim ruthlessly. Your first frame should be mid-action.

The algorithm doesn't care about your follower count. It cares about watch time. And watch time starts in those first 3 seconds.
